How the Adventure Began

What started with a 3-day hike, freshly picked raspberries and a summer storm
became a restaurant dedicated to seasonal, handcrafted dishes. 


One Door North is a chef-owned, chef-driven restaurant, and the second location from husband-wife duo, Fred and Tammy Piehl. Born out of a personal love for the outdoors and a desire to be close to nature, One Door North embraces the simplicity and seasonality of quality ingredients.

Trends come and go. Authentic food made from the best ingredients and served with love is where it’s at. In an era where schedules are packed, One Door North provides guests an opportunity to escape the daily grind, connect with family and friends, and enjoy a genuinely delicious meal.


Chef Fred: A Global Taste

Chef Fred Piehl culinary influences can be traced back to his upbringing with German parents. At age 7, Fred moved to Echichens, Switzerland where his love for good food really took root. Before the words “farm-to-table” were ever printed on a restaurant menu, Fred and his family were purchasing sides of beef from local farms and growing their own vegetables.

Upon graduating from college, Fred pursued his culinary career with an education from Le Cordon Blue Paris. There he earned a Le Grande Diplome for cuisine and pastries. When Fred left Paris, he moved to La Jolla, California where he worked at a number of restaurants before fulfilling his dream and opening his own restaurant, The Smoking Goat, with wife Tammy.

The restaurant duo of Fred and Tammy Piehl ignited a passion for quality rustic fare in the heart of San Diego’s North Park neighborhood with the opening of The Smoking Goat in 2010.

The Smoking Goat married French cuisine with the bounty of San Diego for a menu that is both imaginative yet unpretentious. In response to The Smoking Goat’s overwhelming success, the Piehl Restaurant Group expanded, and ventured into the space next door to launch an entirely new concept, One Door North, serving farm fresh small plates and seasonal fare in an approachable setting with a design nod to discovery and adventure.

With Tammy Piehl managing the Operations and Executive Chef Fred creating and executing in the kitchen, the Piehl Restaurant Group is truly a family business, growing their collective into beloved neighborhood staples.
